Divisions
CID
The Criminal Investigation Department is responsible for investigating serious and complex crimes that go beyond routine policing. Detectives within CID handle cases such as homicide, serious assaults, sexual offences, high-value burglaries, and large-scale fraud. They gather and analyse evidence, interview witnesses and suspects, and build cases to be prosecuted in court. CID officers are plainclothes investigators with specialist training in crime scene management and criminal procedure.
CTSFO
CTSFOs are the highest tier of armed officers within UK policing, specially trained to deal with terrorism-related incidents and the most dangerous armed threats. They are equipped with advanced weaponry and tactics, including specialist breaching techniques and counter-assault capabilities. CTSFO teams can deploy rapidly to incidents involving hostages, marauding terrorist attacks, or high-risk arrests, and often work alongside national counter-terror units and intelligence services.
MO19
MO19 provides armed response and specialist firearms support across the force area. Officers within MO19 are trained to manage incidents involving firearms or other lethal threats, including armed standoffs, vehicle intercepts, and planned firearms warrants. They operate Armed Response Vehicles (ARVs) for rapid deployment and deliver tactical advice to incident commanders. MO19 plays a crucial role in protecting the public from armed crime.
RPU
The Roads Policing Unit focuses on enforcing traffic laws, reducing road casualties, and tackling criminality on the road network. RPU officers conduct high-visibility patrols, manage serious road traffic collisions, and pursue offenders using vehicles for crime, such as drug transport or theft. They are trained in advanced driving, tactical pursuit, and accident investigation. The unit works to keep roads safe while disrupting organised crime that relies on vehicle movement..
